Google's Gemini AI has arrived in Workspace, promising to revolutionise how we work. But does it live up to the hype? As a user who's had the chance to put Gemini through its paces, I'm here to share my honest assessment.
First Impressions:
Initially, I was a bit underwhelmed. Having tried Gemini a few months ago, it didn't seem to justify the extra cost. However, recent updates have significantly improved the experience. While it's not the fully integrated AI assistant I'd hoped for, Gemini offers some genuinely useful features.
Content Creation Powerhouse:
Gemini shines when it comes to content creation. Whether I need to draft a blog post, craft engaging social media updates, or even generate ideas for marketing campaigns, Gemini proves to be a reliable companion. It can even provide creative image prompts that I can then use in Canva (a lifesaver for someone who finds Adobe a bit clunky these days!).
Meeting Magic:
One of the standout features is Gemini's integration with Google Meet. It quietly sits in the background, transcribing meetings and generating concise summaries. No more frantic note-taking or struggling to recall key discussion points! This alone is a massive productivity boost for anyone who spends a significant amount of time in meetings.
Where Gemini Falls Short:
Despite its strengths, Gemini has some limitations that prevent it from being truly transformative:
- Integration Gaps: Gemini operates in silos. It struggles to access information from other apps within the Workspace ecosystem or automate tasks across different platforms. For example, it can't analyse data from my emails and automatically populate a Google Sheet.
- Feature Gaps: While Gemini can generate text and ideas, it can't perform more advanced functions like scheduling meetings, managing complex email campaigns, or conducting in-depth data analysis.
The Verdict:
Gemini is a valuable tool, especially for content creation and meeting management. However, it falls short of its "fully integrated AI assistant" billing. Google needs to bridge the gap between its marketing promises and the reality of Gemini's current capabilities.
Looking Ahead:
Despite its shortcomings, Gemini offers a glimpse into the future of work. As AI technology continues to evolve, we can expect more sophisticated features, seamless integration, and a significant boost in productivity.
The AI Landscape:
It's fascinating to see how different companies are approaching AI in the workplace. While Google is taking a more subtle approach with Gemini, Microsoft seems to be throwing everything at the wall with Copilot and seeing what sticks. I'm keen to see how these different strategies play out.
